MORT DE MARC LAWRENCE

Un internaute avisé surnommé "Lord Henry" nous avise dans le forum de DVD Classik, de la mort à 95 ans du comédien Marc Lawrence. Jean-Pierre Coursodon et Bertrand Tavernier en parlaient dans "Trente ans du cinéma américain", précieux petit livre rouge : "Débuts en 1939. Nombreux policiers. Le bookmaker qui, dans "Asphalt Jungle", assurait le financement du cambriolage mis au point par Sam Jaffe. Le gangster qu'attendent Robinson et sa bande dans "Key Largo", où il vient chercher des faux billets, (...) Acteur et réalisateur T.V. en Europe depuis 1952". À lui seul, il personnifié presque le mettre-étalon du gangster américain, jusqu'au film "Ruby", film de John MacKenzie (1992), à redécouvrir, avec Dany Aiello dans le rôle titre. Très brun et osseux, et à l'instar d'un Lawrence Tierney, il était presque une citation vivante, quand Roberto Rodriguez ou Joe Dante, l'utilisaient. Il avait écrit son auto-biographie en 1991: "Long time no see, confessions of Hollywood Gangster". Comme Sterling Hayden, il avait souffert d'avoir dénoncer certains de ces camarades lors du McCarthysme, après 1951, il a participé à de nombreux films italiens, on le retrouve même dans un joyeux nanar français de Louis Grospierre "Du mou dans la gâchette" de Louis Grospierre, avec Bernard Blier et Jean Lefebvre, ... en gangster bien sûr. Il était également un sculpteur de renom. En contre-emploi, on le retrouvait en prêtre dans "La lettre du Kremlin" (John Huston, 1969). On l’avait revu encore récemment dans le rôle du père de Steve Martin dans "Les Looney Tunes passent à l’action".
